The HP LaserJet P1005 is a compact personal monochrome laser printer for a single desk: plug it into one computer over USB and print black-and-white documents. It is a plain, purpose-built machine dating from 2007, with no scanner, no network port and no menu system to work through — you press print and paper comes out. Print speed runs up to 14 to 15 ppm on A4 and Letter in black, at 600 x 600 dpi native resolution and up to 1200 x 1200 dpi with HP FastRes and ProRes processing, and the first page arrives in as little as 8 seconds. Onboard memory is a fixed 2 MB, connection is USB 2.0 only with no Ethernet, and paper comes from a 150-sheet tray with a single-sheet priority slot above it for letterhead or an envelope. The monthly duty cycle is rated up to 5,000 pages with a recommended volume of 250 to 2,000 pages, and it takes HP 35A and 36A class toner cartridges depending on region. It suits a home study, a small chamber or a shop counter that prints a steady trickle of documents and has no use for colour, scanning or shared access. Toner is far more forgiving than ink in a printer that sits idle for days at a time, and the small footprint means it fits on a shelf beside the monitor instead of needing a table of its own.
